If you're a writer, you've probably heard the term style sheet thrown around quite a bit. But do you know what it is, and how to use it effectively? Don't fret, I'm here to help.
What Is a Style Sheet?
A style sheet is a separate document that serves as a guide for writers and editors, and is made specifically for each book or series. It records information and style choices made by the writer and serves as a rule book.
This allows the author to keep track of the details of the book, and remain consistent with style choices, facts and names.
Likewise, proofreaders and editors that work on the manuscript will use the style sheet, and follow the rules and choices set out by the author. This will keep you in complete control of your manuscript and avoiding editing suggestions that don't align.
Using a style sheet is incredibly useful for authors writing a series; keeping all information in one place that's quick and easy to access when needed.
Many writers start a style sheet when they are in the initial planning stages, and laying out each element can be helpful when pulling everything together.
What Elements Should A Style Sheet Have?
The elements vary depending on the author preferences and genre, but as a minimum, I recommend every style sheet have the following:
Characters - Including names, mannerisms, appearance, backstories, flaws and strengths.
Locations - Names, descriptions, and any information related to a place or building.
Format & Layout - Including how numbers are presented, speech marks (eg. double or single), punctuation, indentations, capitalisation of names and ranks, chapter layout.
Language - Includes spelling preferences and words that are invented for the book (particularly in fantasy).
